Notes: King of Soissons 511-558; King of Austrasia 555-558; King of the Franks 5 58-561; he inherited Soissons on his death in 511. He, with his four br others, attacked and defeated Burgundy under the kings Sigisbert and Go domar early in his reign. With his oldest brother Theuderic I, King of M etz, he attacked the Thuringian Franks under King Hermanfrid, took the k ingdom, and took his daughter Radegund. Next, with his brother Childebe rt I, King of Paris, Chlotar murdered his nephews who were under the ca re of Queen Cl otilda his mother. When Theuderic died, the kingdom was u p for grabs. Chlotar a nd Childebert each received only a small part, t he most of it going to Theudebe rt, his son. In 555, Theudebald, who ha d succeeded his father Theudebert in Aus trasia, died, and Austrasia pa ssed to Chlotar. When Childebert died in 558, Par is fell to Chlotar as w ell, thus making him sole ruler of the Franks. When Chlo tar died in 56 1, the kingdom was divided among his 4 living sons: Charibert (Pa ris), G untram (Burgundy), Chilperic (Soissons), and Sigebert (Metz).

Married between 510 and 515: Ingonthe who was Clotaire I's first wife. S he gave him a daughter and five sons, three of whom survived. Married c irca 516: Aregonde); Radegonde was Clotaire I's second legitimate wife. N ote - between 523 and 560: In accordance with Salic Law, upon Clovis I' s death, his four sons [Thierry, the eldest and born from an unknown co ncubine before Clovis was married, and the other three, Clodomir, Child ebert and Clotaire, divided the kingdom not unlike a cake, but with une qual parts. Clotaire, the youngest, received the most primitive lands, e xtending from the charbonniere forest [the North of Gaule] to the Somme R iver and beyond to include Noyon, Soissons and Laon. Soissons was its c apital. The brothers constantly engaged in bloody fights in order to au gment their holdings. In 523, three of Clovis I's sons, Clotaire, Child ebert and Clodomir, launch their first campaign against the Burgundians . They catch Sigismond=Zygmund, out of the Monastery of Agaune, as well a s his wife and his children. They are given to the custody of Clodomir. H e has the entire family murdered by throwing them into a well at Saint- Peravy-la-Coulombe [near Patay] . Clotaire I became King of Orleans in 5 26 and King of Austrasie in 555. He was known for his cruelty and plott ed and implemented the murder of his brother's (Clodomir) sons with Chi ldebert, his other brother. In July through December 524, two of Clodom ir's sons thus are murdered. Clodomir himself had died at the Battle of V ezeronce [in Isere] on 25 June 524. Clotaire gets Tours and Poitiers. I n 531 Thierry and Clotaire I are occupied in battle against the Thuring ians. Their King, Hermanefried died in combat by falling from a rempart i n Tolbiac [with a little push] . His mother, Radegonde, who is among th e captives, becomes Clotaire's third wife. In 532, Clotaire and Childeb ert begin their third campaign against the Burgundians. This time, they t ake Autun. Upon Thierry;s death in 534, his lands are divided, and Clot aire gets the entire southern portion of Thierry's holdings including G renoble, Die and neighboring cities.

In 536, Clotaire obtains the northern part of Provence encompassing Ora nge, Carpentras and Gap from Vitiges, King of the Ostrogoths. When Theo bald dies in 555, Clotaire gives the Auvergne to his son, Chramne. The n ext year, Clotaire would fail in his campaign against the Saxons, but t hey will continue to pay him an annual tribute of 500 cows. Chramne reb els and fights against his father. Upon Childebert's death 23 December 5 58, he reunited all parts of the Frankish kingdom, and Clotaire becomes s ole King of the Francs. The following year, his son, Chramne again rebe ls, but has to seek refuge with the Count of Brittany, Conober who is e stablished in Vannes. In 560, they lose to Clotaire and Chramne, his wi fe and their children are burnt alive on the orders of Clotaire. Marrie d circa 547: Radegonde, Princess de Turinge , daughter of Hermanefried, K ing de Turinge (8164) and N? ; The Thuringians had been submitted to th e Francs. Clotaire and his half-brother Thierry had led a brutal campai gn against them and had crushed them on the banks of the Saale in 531. A mong Clotaire's share of the bounty was a beautiful young girl, the Chr istian Princess Radegonde. Radegonde was Clotaire I's third legitimate w ife, and fifth mate. Clotaire I was about 50 years old.
