Notes: [Brøderbund WFT Vol. 3, Ed. 1, Tree #2872, Date of Import: Feb 1, 1999] Daniel Bills was a Sgt. in Capt. William Stanton's Co. of Connecticut troops. Daniel was excumunicated from the Quaker society for pledging to the American cause. "We have the original records for Quakertown Monthly Meeting, which is what Daniel & Deborah would have been members of in New Jersey (Kingwoo d MM falls under Quakertown). Hinshaw's Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy traces them to N.C. - Deep River and Deep Creek MMs (Guilford and Surry counties respectively). Hinshaw lists them as being among the original membership of Deep Creek MM. However, we do not have many meeting records for North Carolina. I suggest you contact the Friends Historical Collection, Guilford College, 5800 W. Friendly Ave., Greensboro, NC 27410." (I obtained a copy from Persi Vol.3, Periodical Source Records- Allen County Public Library, Ft. Wayne, IN) BILLS FAMILY Daniel Bills (the first American of his name to add the "s" to the name Bill)... He was a loyal patriot and loathed the name Tory. He married Deborah Denman on 7 Mar 1764. A document (No. 4259) issued by the State of North Carolina, Salisburg Dist. reads: "This is to certify that Daniel Bills was allowed two pounds, fifteen shillings, specie for public claims by the Upper Board o f Auditors the 14th day of Jany 1784." (Note: by Lemuel C. Jones, 716 N. 13th St., Waco, Texas - The Upper Boa rd of Auditors was established by the Legislature to pay claims arising fr om the Revolutionary War. The Salisburg Dist., shown in the voucher, included Surry., Co., NC and other western counties of NC. Daniel Bills is shown in the 1790 Census as a resident of Salisburg Dist., Surry Co. , NC. The Archivist in Raleigh, NC, states the specific purpose for which thi s voucher was issued is not shown, but that it was for furnishing supplie s of one category or another, thus making any descendant of the family eligible for DAR affiliation by reason of the patriotic service of Dani el Bills.) Some records indicate Bills was an invalid for a great part of his life and was prevented from serving throughout the Revolutionary War. He wa s known, also, to have been a Quaker. ..... Quake r records show they came to Kingwood from Shrewsburg Monthly Meeting, Monmouth Co., N.J. They most likely came to Shrewsburg from Barnstable Co., Mass. where there were persons named Bills in the early 1600's. After several years attendance in Guilford Co., NC a Meeting house was established in Surry Co., (now Yadkin Co.) at Deep Creek and there Dani el & Deborah, with their family, attended that Quaker Monthly Meeting unti l they removed to Tennessee. Some members of the family became members o f the Christian Church (later Church of Christ) at Wilson Hill. All of Daniel's children are believed to have been members of a Quaker Monthly Meeting but for marrying "out of unity" as the Quakers termed marrying non Quakers, most of his children were disowned. No evidence shows that Daniel or Deborah were ever disowned and they probably remained Quakers, at least in outlook, in Tennessee Other children of Daniel & Deborah Bills (according to L.C.
